Weekend Away with the Girls

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Everyone needs a break sometimes.  As moms, it’s really hard to take them. We always have a reason why we can’t.  And too many of us reach burnout before we do.

I turned down a weekend trip to the beach with my girlfriends this summer for a multitude of different reasons.  I’ve regretted it ever since.

Well…  They are planning another weekend get-away over Thanksgiving weekend.  And darn it!  I’m gonna go!!!

Yeah…  It’s Thanksgiving weekend.  But we are going to spend turkey day with our families and wait until Friday to leave.   Yeah… It’s the beach in November…  but… so?

I haven’t spent a night away from my husband and children since….  2003!    (I’ve spent nights without either my husband or my children, but not without all of them.)

Yes, I am still trying to justify this to myself.  But I need it oh so badly.

So, tell me what you think.  Give me your support.  Convince me that I need to do this.  You could even buy me a drink for my weekend away if you want to.  (Yes, I finally found an excuse to use the “buy me a beer” paypal donation thing.)  I’m leaving the donation amount open, so you can buy me a beer, a glass of wine, a mixed drink, or a round for me and my friends.  Just click on the margarita.  Thanks!!

Lose the Pooch Belly

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Pooch belly.  Baby belly.  Fat roll.  What do you call that residual flab left on your lower stomach since you had babies?  I call it annoying, frustrating and just plain ugly.  I’ve been doing some research on what makes that “pooch” so difficult to get rid of and what can be done about it.  Here’s what I’ve found:

Visceroptosis - A rare, but possible condition where internal organs have been displaced by poor posture and pregnancy.  Strengthening your inner unit muscles can help alleviate this.

Bloating - Food intolerences and diet can cause bloating of your intestines and make your stomach look extended.  Changes in your diet can help alleviate this.

Body Fat - The obvious primary cause.  The cure?  Burn the fat!

Excess Skin - Even after weight loss, excess skin can hang around.  Especially when you’re… um… older.  I haven’t read any realistic solution to this problem except surgery.  Please comment if you are aware of a better solution!

Muscle Weakness - Most women make the mistake of only exercising their outer abdominal muscles by doing crunches and sit-ups.  If you want to flatten your lower abs, you need to strengthen the inner unit muscles (transverse abdominis, multifidus, pelvic floor and diaphragm).
