Chores teach children about responsibility. They instill a strong work ethic that will be useful later in life. Successful completion of chores can build self-esteem and give a sense of accomplishment. Chores can even build stronger families when children are allowed to contribute to the household. But my all time favorite reason for giving my children those age appropriate chores is this: The more I can get them to do, the less I have to try to cram into my already jam-packed day!
This is the age where children generally want to help with everything. Take advantage of this eagerness now. You will need to stand by and guide them with their tasks, but the lessons you teach at this age will set the foundation for years to come.
Children at this age are really able to do quite a bit, but may start fooling you that they can't if there is something else they would rather do. Keep in mind that they are capable of things like playing computer games and remembering where the snacks are stored.
